Peer support program

Peer support

All students at Gundaroo participate in Peer Support Groups. These groups are formed of Kindergarten to Year 6 students allowing for leadership and support in every group. While working within these structured groups, older students lead younger students through activities that develop their understanding of the school values and habits of effective learners whilst building positive relationships. Our Peer Support program underpins our student’s relationships across the school, regardless of the grade they are in, allowing students to form relationships as well as develop empathy and a sense of responsibility for students which they might not typically engage with.

Peer mediation

Our Peer Mediators program sees all Year 5 and 6 students trained with the necessary skills to interact with students as mediators in the playground at recess and lunch.

They are easily identifiable to younger students by the brightly coloured vest they wear.

There are two peer mediators rostered on to lunch and recess through a rotating system.

The peer mediator program encourages students to:

  • seek assistance for minor social issues in the playground
  • have an opportunity to find resolutions
  • become familiar with the school rules
  • to express themselves when in challenging situations

The peer mediators:

  • develop responsibility
  • develop communication skills
  • develop tolerance, sensitivity and empathy.
