In Year One, we have a strong focus on creating confident, thoughtful and independent learners. This is facilitated by providing learning opportunities that cater to a variety of learning styles and builds a positive classroom culture. The learning environment in Year One promotes creative thinking, problem solving skills and assists students to grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.
Our day begins with our two-hour literacy block where we complete our "Morning Routine” where we undertake a number of tasks that develop lifelong habits of reading, writing and working independently. As an L3 classroom, 3 students at a time work with the teacher in the “engine room” for a literacy lesson that is targeted to the needs of the group of students. We then complete an explicit phonics lesson before commencing our writing portion of the day.
The middle session consists of a Targeting Early Numeracy (TENS) lesson that specifically focuses on the varying needs of each student. We then complete our Maths focus lesson. In Year One, our lessons are designed to be differentiated and effective for all learners through the use of hands on materials, visuals and images, storytelling, goal setting and feedback.
The final session is when we spend time working on Science, History, Geography, Personal Health and Development and Creative Arts.
